Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra review: A flagship worthy phone by Xiaomi

If you’re still on the fence about Xiaomi’s premium phones, the Mi 11 Ultra might persuade you otherwise. Xiaomi has crammed a lot into this phone, and it doesn’t let you down. With 5G, Qualcomm’s flagship CPU, amazing cameras, and even a secondary display, the Mi 11 Ultra is Xiaomi’s premium offering.

The Mi 11 Ultra is Xiaomi’s most costly phone to date, costing $69,999. The Mi 11 Ultra is also only available in two colour options: black and white. We’ve been using the Mi 11 Ultra for a while now, and here’s how we’ve found it.

Display, Design

When you initially acquire the phone, the first thing you’ll notice is how weighty it is. We took a few days to get used to this large equipment, but we were constantly reminded of how hefty it was. The phone is also not particularly portable, especially if you only want to carry it in your pocket. The large camera bump on the rear, which also houses the secondary display, adds to the mix. Having said that, the Mi 11 Ultra is a stunning device.

It has a curved AMOLED display on the upper left corner with a punch-hole camera. On top of that, Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus protection is included. The display supports HDR10+ and has a refresh rate of 120Hz. You can also change the resolution between FHD+ and WQHD+. The colours are vibrant and vivid, and the clarity is outstanding. It has one of the greatest displays you can purchase right now on a phone.

The secondary display is more of a bonus, but it’s an excellent one. It can show you notifications, the time, and the date, all of which are customizable. It can also display photographs, including those from your phone, and serve as a viewfinder for the rear cameras, which has proven to be extremely useful. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint sensor, although it isn’t very reliable, and we had to try a few times before it unlocked.

Performance

The Snapdragon 888 engine is combined with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage in the Mi 11 Ultra. We had no problems with the phone’s performance during our time with it. There were no lags or app crashes, thus it was a pleasant experience. The software experience was also positive, especially since there were no advertisements. Our test unit runs MIUI 12.0.2, which is based on Android 11. Heavy games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Genshin Impact operate smoothly on the phone, though it does grow hot after a while of gaming. The dual speaker system with Harman Kardon on the Mi 11 Ultra is another highlight of the phone. It’s ideal for watching videos and playing games, and it also functions as a Bluetooth speaker.

The phone has a 5,000mAh battery that supports cable charging up to 67W and wireless turbocharging up to 67W. Our review unit came with a 55W charging adaptor, which is still fairly quick considering the phone charged to 100% in about 70 minutes. The Mi 11 Ultra’s battery life is adequate, lasting a full day with a daily activity that includes streaming videos, social networking, and occasional gaming.

Camera

It was a little tough to focus on subjects, especially for close-up photographs, because it required some time to obtain the appropriate focus. In terms of low-light photography, it managed to capture some decent images with adequate clarity and colour. There’s also an AI feature for adjusting your photos artificially.

The Mi 11 Ultra also has several unique camera functions, such as vlogging, which has preset video effects for shooting movies in landscape mode. There’s also a short video mode with effects and background music that’s specifically designed for Instagram Reels.

Final Thoughts

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra excels in practically every aspect of a premium smartphone. In general, we have few complaints. However, several areas, such as the fingerprint sensor, require improvement. It has a high-end appearance and feels to it, and it provides a satisfying overall experience. The value-for-money tag still hangs over Xiaomi’s head, but the Mi 11 Ultra demonstrates why this smartphone is worth that price. If you’re looking for a high-end smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is a great option.
